IMDB rating: 7.20 Plot: Steve Zissou, sea-film auteur a la Jacques Cousteau, has reason to be melancholy: his partner has been eaten, perhaps by a mythic jaguar shark, his wife may be taking up with her ex-husband, a young man appears claiming Steve is his father (Steve hates fathers), his most recent films have tanked, he’s having trouble raising money for his venture to revenge his partner, and he’s attracted to a pregnant reporter who prefers the pretender. At sea, in pursuit of the shark, will he escape pirates and mutiny, forge the bonds of fatherhood, place his arm around his wife, find the monster of the deep, re-establish box office hegemony, and discover a reason to smile? |

the life aquatic with steve zissou?
ok..i rented this movie- and i wanted to love this movie, but i just couldnt grasp why it was getting so much praise…i wouldnt go so far to say it was bad, but i was mildly dissapointed…this seems like "the big lebowski"-style humor, just with alot less of it…it had some great stuff in there- the recurring david bowie portugese songs, the luxurys of the ship, etc
i like the concept, i wouldve loved to see more of the colorful fish in it tho…i think it had great potential it just should have decided what to be…it seemed like the story was just there to facillitate the comedy, yet there were not very many laughs at all…the funny parts i remember-when the son asks wilson if he can call him dad and he settles on stevesy; the hands together- "ho!" chant; and bill murrays rambo style shootout with the pirates when their on his ship
am i missing anything…3 funny parts (that induce mild chuckles) and a weak story? why do people like it so much–i realize its by no means a fantastic movie, but for a comedy, it has very high reviews
Try watching it again. I felt the same way the first time I saw it and found that I missed a lot of little things that where funny. Then again some movies just don’t connect with some people. I never thought Blues Brothers was that funny but other people think it’s one of the funniest movies ever.

Its hard to say. Fans of Wes Anderson love it. It is typical Wes. He has a certain style that people love.
I am a fan. The storyline could have been a bit stronger. But for me its the off the cuff humour and the odd strange moments he introduces like the whole interior of the boat that looks like a set, and its meant to look that way.
It depends on different people. If you liked it, thats cool. If you didn’t thats cool too.
I personally didn’t like films like Matrix or Godfather, but people praise them.

You’re not alone. I didn’t like it at all. It’s been a few years since I saw it, so I can’t go into detail, but I can say that I felt unfulfilled at the end.

I agree with you on some things. Its definitely a strange film. I think people like it because of the novelty aspect of the movie. I do like the screenplay and the sets a lot. Bill Murray is a treat to watch as usual. Its just so weird and offbeat…maybe that’s the reason i like it. Its directed by Wes Andersson….check out his other films….his humor is kinda understated…Rent The Royal Tennenbaums, Rushmore, Bottle Rocket and The Darjeeling Limited…you will be well tuned in to his brand of humor.
